Improving pulse oximetry accuracy in dark-skinned patients

The potential for inaccuracy in the use of pulse oximetry to measure peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂) in patients with darker skin has been particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This editorial in the British Journal of Anaesthesia explains the reasons why pulse oximeters can give inaccurate readings in dark-skinned patients and current regulations and limitations in this area.
